昨日の英語レッスンで先生と読んだ記事を見つけました。

J.D. Salinger strikes back

もともとは Los Angeles Times の記事で、Japan Times ではタイトルを
J.D. Salinger waxing litigious as ever at 90
としていました。

一緒に上から読んで、同じところで笑って、同じところでうなずいて、
楽しめたのがうれしかった。時間にして 30 分くらい。

以下、やりとりを書きます。（ほとんど自分の復習ともいう）
記憶で書いているので、英語の間違いはスルーしてください（笑）。

J: What's the word... litigious?
A: Oh, it means he wants to sue. Do you know the word sue? Sue the people?
J: Yeah.
A: to sue = to bring a litigation. He's litigious = he wants to sue.

J: What is wax? My image of wax is ... well, it's related to moon.
A: Oh, OK. It's relate to moon, but well, here... it's to think, or consider.

J.D. Salinger, as you may have read over the last few weeks, is inveighing against "phonies" yet again.

A: Do you know the word phonies?
J: Yes. It's like a phonie clue in the detective stories.
A: Yeah. It's false. It's Fuse.. Fushi...??? What do you call it in Japanese? In Japanese, it's ...
J: Fu...???? I don't know.

Fifty-eight years since the publication of "The Catcher in the Rye" -- indeed, 44 years since he published anything -- the famously reclusive and litigious author, now 90, recovering from hip surgery and totally deaf, has taken legal action to stop the U.S. publication of a Swedish novel called "Sixty Years Later: Coming Through Rye." Subtitled "An Unauthorized Fictional Examination of the Relationship Between J. D. Salinger and His Most Famous Character," the novel depicts a 76-year-old Holden Caulfield, who meets his author and revisits various locations and characters featured in the original book.

A: Do you know the word reclusive?
J: No.
A: Stays home, secretive, you can also say... not seen in public.

Salinger's suit calls the book "a rip-off pure and simple."

A: Do you know a rip-off?
J: No.
A: It's to copy... but cheaply.
J: Mimic! or imitate.
A: Yeah, it's a cheap mimic. Cheap. We also say... "I've been ripped off." It means you are cheated of money. You know, if you are in crowd on the street and your walet has gone, you can say "I've been ripped off."

Lawyers representing "Sixty Years Later" claim that the book engages in criticism and parody and therefore constitutes "fair use" of copyrighted material. A judge in New York, who agreed to temporarily block the book's publication (it's already been released in Sweden and Britain) is expected to make a final ruling in the next few days.

A: Do you know the word parody? It's... it's....
J: Oh, OK. I know the word parody.
A: It's like a joke, imitation.
J: Yeah.

On certain levels, there's something heartening about Salinger's famous unwillingness to allow any derivations of his work -- he has turned down film adaptation offers from Steven Spielberg, Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, to name just a few, and has blocked a BBC stage production of "The Catcher in the Rye."

J: What is BBC stage production? Stage... Is it a play? in the theater?
A: Yes.

By standing up for the integrity of his own material, Salinger also stands up for the notion that books and stories are fully integrated objects; that they are not a means to an end but the end itself. And in a culture in which books are increasingly thought of as merely source material, the idea of books as whole and finite entities is, sadly, a little bit radical.

But, as I am hardly the first to point out, Salinger's protectiveness of his work isn't just stand-up, it veers into the paranoid, mercurial and even delusional.

A: Do you know veer? It's slide into, change into.
J: Ah-ha...
A: Do you know mercurial? It's... It's...
J: It's like forceful?? Focefully done something??
A: Humm. And the delusional is... crazy.
J: OK. So Slinger is ... crazy.
A: He crazily protect his book.

What we've heard about Salinger in the last four decades has mostly to do with his eccentricities and cantankerousness.

A: cantankerousness is ... always in a bad mood.

He's rumored to have experimented with many forms of spirituality and dietary philosophies (among them Zen Buddhism, Dianetics and -- use your imagination -- "urine therapy") as well as making efforts to block virtually any form of derivation or dissemination of his work.

It's not just movie adaptations he eschews.

A: eschew is... to avoide

In 1986, Salinger stopped the author of an unauthorized biography from including in his book letters that Salinger had sent to friends and colleagues. A decade later, Salinger put the brakes on the release of his last published work, a novella that had appeared in the New Yorker but had not yet appeared in book form. Apparently put off by the inevitable tide of publicity, he asked his publisher, a small press in Virginia, to withdraw the book.

J: What is a novella?
A: Oh, it's a small novel. A short novel.
J: I see. And it's not published yet?
A: Yes, it had appeared in the New Yorker but had not yet appeared in book form.
J: So... if I want to read the novella, I should check up the New Yorker??
A: Right. (Sigh)

But the "Sixty Years Later" suit, while not surprising, seems somehow sadder than the previous legal actions. There's a sense that Salinger might not have a grasp on exactly what he's objecting to and why. And I suspect a lot of people are asking the same question that I am: "Doesn't the great J.D. Salinger have bigger fish to fry?"

A: Do you know the expression "Doesn't the great J.D. Salinger have bigger fish to fry?"
J: Well,... No.
A: It's ... does he have bigger thing to think or consider. "doesn't he have more to worry about?"
J: Ah! I see. He should write a new novel.
A: Yeah.

No offense to "Sixty Years Later's" author, 32-year-old Fredrik Colting (a.k.a. J.D. California -- you can't make this stuff up),

J: What is a.k.a?
A: "also known as"... a.k.a. It's a shortage of "also known as."

but I'm having a hard time believing this book could cause a lot of damage. Colting, who also happens to be the co-founder of Nicotext, the publisher that released "Sixty Years Later" in Sweden, is the author of two other books: "The Macho Man's (Bad) Joke Book" and "The 100 Best and Absolute Greatest Heavy Metal Bands in the World."

A: So he is not a selious author! No.

The website for Nicotext doesn't exactly suggest that Colting and his business partner, Carl-Johan Gadd, are engaged in a conspiracy to pilfer the intellectual property of legendary literary figures.

A: pilfer is.. to steal

Instead, it features a photograph of Colting and Gadd jumping in the air and grinning with mock exuberance. "While thumbing our collective nose at the literati," says the mission statement, "we have found our niche amongst the useless, the trivial and the potentially offensive." Additional titles include "The Porn Star Name Book" and "The Pet Cookbook," a humorous guide to cooking not for your pet but, shall we say, with your pet (parrot porridge, goldfish wrap, you get the idea).

A: Oh, no.
J: with your pet?? Does it mean cook your pet??
A: Yeah.
J: Oh, no.

Heard of any of these? I didn't think so. And my guess is that few people would have heard of "Sixty Years Later" -- U.S. release or not -- if not for the reflexive defensiveness of the Salinger camp. In fact, I'm getting the feeling that Nicotext's next title might be "The Lucky Lawsuit Book: How an Obscure Author Can Gain International Recognition by Being Sued by a Famous Author Who Really Should Have Better Things to Do."

A & J laughed.

Maybe Salinger is holding on to Holden a little too tightly. Either that, or he's secretly been working as his opponents' publicist for years now. In which case, he may have had a decades-long career as the greatest P.R. man who ever lived.

A: It's interesting.
J: Yeah!

ぼくはSalingerに同情しますね。

私も「ライ麦・・・・」とばし派です。あの後彼の人生は大きく変化したんだろうか？禅と精神世界へ大きく舵を切りました。

で、さかぽん、The New Yorker の the novella 読まれました？

（本になってないんですってよ、ほーっほっほっほ）

も、ひとつのほう（笑）、録音はしてないのです。
A 先生が、to sue = to bring a litigation などなどノートに書いて、最後に渡してくれるので、それを元に記憶を反芻して書きました。
外国の方と話していると、心のどこかがビックリしていて、記憶が鮮明です。
帰りの電車でも、記事を読み返して反芻してました。

ああいえばよかった、とか、そういう反省もふくめて、何度も反芻して、牛になりそうです（笑）。

（こういうのが、本来の？ 脳内シャドーイングなのかと思います。言葉が発せられる前の、受け取った言葉の音の貯蓄）

it's related to moon だなんて、
こんなカタイ、変な言い方じゃなくて、
My image of the word wax is... the moon is waxing. と素直に言えばよかったなあ！
と、いろいろ反芻するのでした〜。

私は、ライ麦、半分で投げた派です。

再びこんばんは。

SalingerはOne of my favouritesなのです。始まりはライ麦だったけど、その後の作品を読んだら好きになりました。で、ライ麦だけがあまり好きになれない。小説なら全部読んでます、英語・日本語織り交ぜて。。変人でも（？！）なんでもいいんです。で、Bananafishはね、何回か読んでいるのに、ストーリーはわかるけど、で？で？？？？って疑問がいまだにあるんですよ。で、さかぽん！あれはなんなんでしょう？

記憶で書けるって英語以外の才能な気がしますよ。私は聞いたことは全部イメージ記憶なので日本語でもサマリーしか語れないタイプなので、なんかとてつもなくスゴイ。

どーも猫です。
サリンジャーが生きていたことにびっくりしました。
バナナフィッシュはすごい作品やと思います。
ライ麦はバツですけど、また読みたくなりますね。

Bananafish は、翻訳で読んで、ぶっとんで、忘れた頃にまた読んで、ぶっとんで、なのですが、まだ原書を読んでないのです。

別件で。
記憶で書いたのは、むしろ自分が言ったことのほうを覚えていて、そこをよすがに思い出してるみたいです。記事よみかえすと、ここでこんな話したなあって思うし。
Britain's Got Talent の話もしたのだけど、そこで先生が何を言ったかは、内容（イメージ？）は覚えてるけど、言葉はあまり覚えてないもの。(^^;;
